Understand U.S. Academic Performance Through the Major Assessments
Explore PISA, TIMSS, PIRLS, NAEP and ICILS results through official scores, historical trends, proficiency levels, state data, international comparisons and student-group differences.
Find the Measurement That Matches the Question
Filter by student population, subject, comparison level, year and result type. The results point only to data pages already published on US Academic Scores.
PISA, TIMSS, PIRLS, NAEP and ICILS scores are not one common scale. The explorer does not combine, normalize or rank scores across assessments. It narrows the library to the measurement that fits the selected population and reporting context.
Results narrow as filters change. If no result remains visible, the current published library does not contain that exact combination.
PISA 2025 Science
Science is a separate PISA scale; the OECD average was 482.
PISA 2025 Mathematics
Mathematics is a separate PISA scale; the OECD average was 463.
PISA 2025 Reading
Reading is a separate PISA scale; the OECD average was 461.
PISA 2025 Computational Problem Solving
Computational problem solving is reported separately from science, mathematics and reading.
PISA Results by Cycle
Use the combined cycle page when the question spans more than one PISA subject.
PISA Science Trend
The page keeps the science series within its own PISA scale.
PISA Mathematics Trend
The page follows comparable PISA mathematics cycles.
PISA Reading Trend
The page follows the U.S. reading series across comparable cycles.
PISA 2025 Proficiency Levels
Use this page for low-performer and top-performer shares rather than mean score alone.
PISA 2025 Gender Gaps
Gender differences are reported within each subject scale.
PISA 2025 Socioeconomic Gaps
Socioeconomic comparisons remain tied to the PISA student population and cycle.
TIMSS 2023 Grade 4 Mathematics
Grade 4 mathematics is a separate TIMSS population and scale series.
TIMSS 2023 Grade 8 Mathematics
Grade 8 mathematics should not be averaged with Grade 4 results.
TIMSS 2023 Grade 4 Science
Grade 4 science is reported separately from Grade 8 science.
TIMSS 2023 Grade 8 Science
Grade 8 science is a separate TIMSS population.
TIMSS Results Over Time
Use the overview when the question spans grades or subjects.
TIMSS Mathematics Trend
The two grade series remain separate populations.
TIMSS Science Trend
The two grade series remain separate populations.
TIMSS 2023 International Benchmarks
Use benchmark attainment when the question is about performance bands rather than only mean scores.
PIRLS 2021 U.S. Reading Result
The U.S. 2021 administration occurred after the sampled cohort had entered Grade 5.
PIRLS U.S. Reading Trend
The 2021 U.S. Grade 5 administration is kept outside the direct Grade 4 trend line.
PIRLS 2021 Reading Benchmarks
Use the benchmark section for attainment bands on the PIRLS reading scale.
NAEP 2024 Grade 4 Mathematics
Main NAEP grade and subject scales remain separate.
NAEP 2024 Grade 8 Mathematics
Main NAEP grade and subject scales remain separate.
NAEP 2024 Grade 4 Reading
Reading and mathematics scores are not on one common scale.
NAEP 2024 Grade 8 Reading
Reading and mathematics scores are not on one common scale.
NAEP 2024 State Performance
State comparisons use the matching NAEP grade, subject and reporting population.
NAEP National Score Trends
Each grade-by-subject series should be read as its own trend.
NAEP 2024 Achievement Levels
NAEP Proficient is an assessment performance standard, not a state grade-level standard.
NAEP Student-Group Results
Student-group comparisons remain tied to the selected grade, subject and reporting group.
ICILS 2023 Computer and Information Literacy
CIL is a separate ICILS achievement scale.
ICILS 2023 Computational Thinking
CT is separate from the CIL scale.
ICILS U.S. Two-Cycle Change
The United States has two reported ICILS cycles; CIL and CT remain separate scales.
ICILS 2023 Student-Group Results
The published pillar includes gender and socioeconomic comparisons within each ICILS domain.
Choose an Assessment
Each program measures a different student population and answers a different set of questions about U.S. academic performance.
Science, mathematics, reading and computational problem solving among U.S. 15-year-old students in international context.
International reading achievement. The delayed U.S. 2021 administration tested the sampled cohort after students had entered Grade 5.
Main national and state results across U.S. grades, subjects and student groups. NAEP also maintains a separate age-based long-term trend series.
Computer and information literacy and computational thinking among U.S. eighth-grade students in international context.

Five Assessments Measure Different Populations and Skills
Results remain tied to the assessment, population, subject and scale that produced them.
| PISA | Science, Mathematics, Reading & Additional Domains | 15-year-old students | International performance and cross-country comparisons |
| TIMSS | Mathematics & Science | Grade 4 and Grade 8 | Grade-based international achievement and trends |
| PIRLS | Reading | Grade 4 target population; U.S. 2021 testing occurred in Grade 5 after the delayed administration | International elementary reading achievement and benchmark attainment |
| NAEP | U.S. Academic Achievement | Selected U.S. grade levels; separate age-based long-term trend samples | National, state and student-group comparisons |
| ICILS | Computer and Information Literacy & Computational Thinking | U.S. Grade 8 students | International digital-skill comparisons and domain-specific trends |
Official Sources and Measurement Context
Scores are most useful when the source, population, measurement scale and statistical limits remain visible.
Official Sources First
Primary sources include NCES, the Nation’s Report Card, OECD and IEA assessment publications, databases and technical documentation.
Statistical Context
Numerical differences are kept separate from differences that official statistical testing identifies as measurable. Rounded values alone are not used to make stronger comparison claims.
Corrections
Revised official statistics, source discrepancies and material factual errors are handled under a defined correction standard.
Independent Resource
US Academic Scores is an independent informational website focused specifically on U.S. assessment results and their statistical context.
